In Nyemo, incense is more than fragrance. It is a living craft shaped by mountain materials, flowing water, practiced hands, and knowledge carried forward through generations.

Southwest of Lhasa, the landscape opens into valleys edged by high mountains. Here lies Nyemo County, a place closely associated with Tibetan incense and the traditional crafts that have long supported everyday and spiritual life.

Pure Sang begins here—not with synthetic perfume or a factory formula, but with raw herbs, woods, and resins shaped by hand.

A Place Where Craft Still Lives

Nyemo is known for a group of enduring crafts that includes Tibetan incense, Tibetan paper, and woodblock carving. These practices are not preserved only behind glass. They continue through people who grind, blend, press, dry, carve, and make as part of daily life.

In Thonpa, a township within Nyemo, incense-making has been practiced for more than 1,300 years. Historical accounts describe water-powered mills along the river grinding plant material for incense, while local artisans complete the remaining work by hand.

More Than a Method

A traditional craft is not simply a list of steps. It is the knowledge of how finely to grind a wood, how different botanicals behave when blended, how the mixture should feel in the hand, and when mountain air has dried each stick enough.

Much of this understanding cannot be separated from place. It develops through repetition, observation, and the passing of experience from one maker to another.

Recognized, but Not Frozen in Time

In 2008, Nyemo's Tibetan incense-making craft was included on China's national intangible cultural heritage list. The recognition acknowledges the cultural importance of the technique, but the craft remains meaningful because people continue to use it, adapt it, and pass it forward.

Its history can be measured in centuries, yet its purpose still belongs to the present: preparing a space, marking a transition, accompanying reflection, and bringing intention to an ordinary part of the day.
